The victim was walking to work on North Shore Road, Hamilton, at about 8.a.m.

when he stopped to speak to a man about a stolen livery cycle.

The man then assaulted the victim, disappeared and then returned to the scene with an accomplice armed with a metal pole and a plank of wood.

The victim was overpowered and received severe injuries, including cuts to his head and body and a broken nose.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The abandonment of the Autosub project at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research meant disappointment for scientists, who had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the sub.

A battery explosion caused damage to the side of the Autosub -- which is unique in that it is powered by 2,500 regular batteries, just like the ones used in a portable stereo.

It had been shipped in by sea but had to be returned to the UK after scientists couldn't repair the damage.

It had been expected to use the unmanned vessel for detailed ocean research, including an attempt at the longest ocean voyage by an autonomous submarine.

Remote-controlled by staff on land, the Autosub also uses satellite technology to pinpoint its location.

A BBSR spokesman said scientists had tried to repair the damage but had to admit defeat and send the sub back to Britain.

But she added that it is hoped that it can be brought back to the island later in the year.

"This would enable the Placement Officers to concentrate on those who are still looking for placement,'' a spokesperson said.

The bag was described as cream-coloured and contained a Minolta camera, an undisclosed sum of cash, and personal items.

The culprit was described as a thin black male, wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering and a red helmet.
