Planning a trip to this North African gem involves a little patience and lot of good timing; you have to be prepared to dig for the best flight and hotel that speaks to you.

There are a range of different flight options when it comes to getting there, all involve connections. If planning a week-long trip in May expedia.com offers roundtrip flights through the United States from $1,694. This means you'll depart Bermuda on midday Saturday and arrive in Marrakech the next morning (after stopovers in New York and Casablanca). If you want to make the trip more worthwhile and stay for two or more weeks, you can get the same roundtrip flight with American Airlines for $1,617. If going through the US, May appears to be a cheaper time to fly; prices soar in the summer months, particularly June and July. By September, however, the prices drop to the $1,500 range, meaning you can also avoid the intense desert heat.

For those looking for fewer transfers you can get a standard ticket to London with British Airways for $1,081, then fly direct with a variety of airlines for upwards of $500, easyJet currently offers a flight for $537 (courtesy of expedia.co.uk).

When it comes to accommodation in Marrakech there are countless options to suit your taste and budget. Staying at the Le Pavillon du Golf, a contemporary hotel with 18-hole golf course and spa, can cost upwards of $750 a night. For a more inexpensive option, and perhaps one with more Moroccan flair, there are a host of beautiful Riads (grand homes converted into hotels) in the city centre. Rooms generally range in price from $130-$300, including the Riad Zolah Marrakech which offers local hospitality, breakfasts and airport transport.

For under $100 a night, you can stay at Hotel Atlas Asni, in close proximity to the modern city centre and enjoy access to the spa, pool and traditional Hammam (steam bath). Another budget option is the Dar Baraka Karam, a relaxed guesthouse in walking distance to the Old Medina, ranging from $60 for a single room and $110 for a double.

Transport: Your best bet is to arrange taxis with the hotel. If you feel comfortable finding one on your own, negotiate a price before getting into the car. If you're lucky enough to find a hotel in the city centre than everything, from the sites to the restaurants, should be in walking distance for you.
