Bean shatters U-18 record

Bermuda Pacers teenager Alexis Bean set a dimly lit Front Street ablaze last night in record-breaking fashion.

Not only did Bean knock some 14 seconds off the previous best Girls? Under-18 record of five minutes and 33 seconds ? set by Flora Duffy in 2004 ? but the Warwick Academy student?s winning time of 5:19.91 also qualified her for this year?s Carifta Games in Guadeloupe.

Struggling hard to regain her breath after having broken away from a lead pack that also included pre-race favourites Deanne Lightbourne, Ashley Berry and Rebecca Heyliger, Bean told : ?This is what I had hoped to achieve all along . . . to come out on top tonight.?

Bean finished 10 seconds ahead of second-placed finisher Heyliger (5:29) with Lightbourn taking third in 5:30.

?Heading towards the Bird Cage I knew I just had to hang with the leaders,? she continued. ?And then once we headed back up Front Street (towards the Cabinet Building) I knew I had to make my move somewhere along the way.?

Bean wasted little time throwing down the gauntlet near the Cenotaph and powering her way unchallenged to the Flag Pole finish line.

With victory safely in the bag, the promising athlete added: ?This is great and something I wanted to achieve.?

So how does she intend to celebrate?

?I?m going to Disney Land,? the 14-year-old athlete replied.

In the Boys? Under-18 age group, Bean?s Bermuda Pacers team-mate Aaron Evans held off challenges from Matthew Spring and Taijaun Talbot to take line honours in a time of 4:35 ? 13 seconds off record pace but three seconds ahead of fellow club member Spring who finished second in a time of 4:38. Talbot grabbed third in 4:57.

After receiving a warm hug from special friend Mandy, Evans explained: ?My plan was to stay behind my training partner Matthew (Spring) and Taijaun (Talbot) until the last part of the race and then make my break.?

That break arrived shortly after making the turnaround at the Longtail.

?It feels good to win my first Front Street Mile,? he smiled. ?Overall I think my plan worked to perfection.?

Meanwhile, Jazmine Outerbridge (5:56) edged out Kyla Bolden (5:58) by a two ticks of the clock to clinch the Girls? Under-12 age group, while Megan Berry (6:06 finished third.

David Lunn romped to a comfortable and impressive win in the Boys? Under-12 division, clocking 5:17. Winton Woodley placed second in 5:255 with Brighton Swan taking third in 5:44.
