Rain and fall keep Richards waiting

Antoine Richards' quest for a maiden Champions Cup Series (CCS) title continues after inclement weather and a spill on the track put paid to the Bermudian Superbike Expert's chances in Florida last weekend.

Competing at the Jennings Grand Prix, the former Warwick Academy student struggled to keep pace with the leaders in the 750cc Supersport Class racing on wet roads, before a spill in the 600cc Superbike Class saw Richards eventually cross the finish a lap down on the rest of the field.

Heavy rain also hampered his pre-race preparations at the two-mile long Jennings racetrack.

"Severe weather negatively impacted the weekend; it rained almost all day on Saturday.

"I only managed to get two out of the six practice sessions on a semi-dry track," Richards told The Royal Gazette.

The 20-year -old motorcycle racer had gone into the weekend with high hopes of achieving his fourth podium finish of the season but quickly found himself at a great disadvantage racing without the proper tyres on slick roads.

"Being the only Superbike Expert racer without special rain tyre I struggled to keep pace without the additional grip that rain tyres provide," explained Richards, who eventually had to settle for 11th position in a field of 24 in the Supersport race.

"I had regular slicks which have no traction in the rain."

In the 600cc Superbike race, Richards managed a good start but slid out of contention attempting to push the envelope early in the race.

"Unfortunately I ran wide while trying to overtake and slid out on the grass," he said.

"But I managed to pick the bike up and finish the race a lap down."

Richards' best finish to date in the United States came last year as a rookie at the Homestead Miami Speedway where he placed a respectable fifth.

And now he is hoping for better results when he returns to the Jennings race track next month to resume his bid for an elusive first win in the CCS.
