Wade joins U-19 coaching staff

Former St.George’s Cup Match skipper Clevie Wade has been appointed assistant coach of Bermuda’s Under-19 national team who will begin qualification for the 2008 World Cup in August.

The 46-year-old former top all-rounder got the nod for the post following Herbie Bascome’s promotion to assistant coach of the senior national cricket team.

Wade is the newest addition to the Island’s Under-19 national team coaching staff that also consists of brothers Arnold and Andre Manders.

Bermuda’s youngsters failed in their bid to qualify for the 2006 Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka after finishing tied for second along with host-country Canada in Ontario in the summer of 2005.

USA, coached by former Trinidadian and West Indies batsman Larry Gomes, advanced from the Americas’ qualifying group to the finals.

Last year saw Pakistan become the first side to retain the Under-19 World Cup after their fast bowlers produced a remarkable performance to bring their side back from the dead in a thrilling final against India in Colombo.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) have yet to name a venue for the Americas’ Under-19 World Cup qualifiers, although it is understood Bermuda is currently being considered as a possible host country for the tournament.

St.George’s’ batsman Oronde Bascome has again been named captain of the Under-19 team that will begin their preparations later this month for next July’s Sir Gary Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament in Barbados.

Wade, meanwhile, has officially resigned as coach of Premier Division powerhouse Southampton Rangers.

During eight seasons at the South Shore club, Wade coached Rangers to five league championships, three Belco Cups and two Premier Division KO titles.

Wade currently holds an English Cricket Board Level One coaching certificate and has coached senior cricket locally since 1999.
