<Bz19>Blazers look to extend lead

Boulevard can take another step towards clinching a first Premier Division championship in 12 years tomorrow.

Blazers travel to Lords to take on whipping-boys St.David’s, cognisant that a win over the Islanders, coupled by a Somerset Trojans’ win over second placed North Village, will send them four points clear at the top.

Barring a catastrophe the league leaders will find easy pickings against an Islanders team that should begin making plans for a speedy return to the First Division.

The Islanders could be condemned to 12.30 football next season as a Blazers win, coupled with PHC and Dandy Town wins over Cougars and Paget, would confirm their whereabouts for next October.

Boulevard have been without captain Shaki Crockwell who has been troubled by an ankle injury in recent weeks. But even in Crockwell’s absence Blazers still have enough fire power up front in Angelo Simmons, Wolde (Whoppa) Place and Lamaul (Smucky) Crofton to keep the Warrior’s defence — which has conceded 25 goals in ten matches so far — on edge.

Trojans, meanwhile, host fellow league title contenders Village at Somerset Cricket Club in a match neither can afford to lose.

Village blanked Somerset 3-0 at Bernard Park last November, but the West Enders — who have a game in hand over Blazers and Village — have gone from strength to strength since then and now find themselves in the middle of a four-horse race for the title.

However, Village — who are two points ahead of Trojans in the standings — have also stepped up their game in recent weeks and demonstrated that they do not intend to relinquish their title without a fight.

Elsewhere, Paget and Town will both attempt to pick up much-needed points to steer clear of the cellar, though Hornets — who thrashed Lions 5-0 last November at White Hill Field — will enter this contest as heavy favourites.

Fourth-placed Devonshire Cougars battled with PHC last night at the Den (see report opposite).

In First Division action, league leaders Ireland Rangers face off against fellow promotion contenders Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval, while second-placed Devonshire Colts travel to Bernard Park to take on Social Club.

Fourth-placed Wolves, who have lost valuable ground on the leaders in recent weeks, are away to Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field, Prospect United host Hamilton Parish at Police Field, while St.George’s Colts and X Roads will slug it out at Wellington Oval in an East End derby.

The last time these two rivals met at Garrison Field, St.George’s blew a 3-0 lead with ten minutes remaining to allow X Roads to steal a hard-earned point.
