The pair lost out in their final chance to get to Barcelona when they were ousted from the doubles competition, going down 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) to Aruba in a fiercely-contested match, which could have gone either way.

Evans and Way squandered two set points during the second-set tie-breaker, the first at 6-5 and then again at 8-7. Aruba then reeled off three straight points to take the match.

When contacted at his New York apartment yesterday Way said that there is some stiff opposition down south of the border.

"The level of competition was very high with most all of the players regularly competing on the professional circuit.

"The guy (Roger Smith) who beat Donald (Evans) had beat Ivan Lendl two years ago.'' Playing together as a team for the first time Way felt that he and Evans combined quite well. Both have good size with big serves and can also cover the net.

Said Way: "We played pretty well together. I think that with more experience in international matches we could do a little better.

"As it stands the games were close enough that it could have gone either way.'' The former fixture on the local scene went on to comment that Bermuda might want to enter a Davis Cup team to give players more exposure to outside competition.

"I think that Bermuda should do like the other islands such as Bahamas, Aruba and Jamaica and try and put together a Davis Cup team so that we can get at least three or four international matches a year to gain experience,'' said Way.

"You'd be playing every year and would be ready when things like the Olympics come around.''
