Bascome in frame for St George’s job

Herbie Bascome (right) could be reunited with son Oronde at St George?s CC next season.

Herbie Bascome has been linked with the vacant cricket coaching job at St George’s Cricket Club. The former St George’s and Bermuda all-rounder has emerged as a potential successor for Clay Smith, who resigned from the top post at the end of last season to make a bid for the presidency of Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB).So far St George’s officials have been reluctant to comment on the matter amid ongoing claims that Bascome is close to signing off on a deal that could potentially see him take over coaching duties at the First Division club for at least the upcoming season. It had been speculated that the former St George’s Cup Match skipper would replace Ricky Brangman as coach at Premier side Devonshire after the latter resigned at the end of the 2011 campaign. However Bascome, who captained St George’s to a controversial Cup Match victory over Somerset at Wellington Oval in 2005, has since been linked with the vacant coaching job at his other old stomping ground at Wellington Oval.Should he in fact ink a coaching deal at St George’s it is likely he will be put in charge of the East Enders’ Cup Match team as well.Bascome, who is a certified West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Level II coach, worked as an assistant to ex-national coach Gus Logie who led Bermuda to 2007 ICC World Cup qualification. His son, Oronde, is St George’s current captain.Last season the dreadlocked opening batsman followed in his father’s footsteps by leading St George’s to a two -wicket Cup Match win against Somerset at Wellington Oval.Like their East End rivals, Somerset are also currently searching for a new coach for the upcoming season.Earlier this month The Royal Gazette revealed that former Western Stars trio Albert Steede, Jeff Richardson and Andre Manders had been approached over the possibility of coaching Somerset’s Cup Match team this summer. The trio are among those being considered as a potential successor for Ricky Hoyte whose one-year contract has expired.“At this stage everybody we want is not confirmed so I don’t want to call any names,” commented Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Maybury. “Quite a few former players have been approached but I am going to leave it there for now.”It remains unclear whether Hoyte has shown any interest in having his contract renewed. But is understood that club captain Jekon Edness could be asked to coach the club’s league team during the upcoming season, with Cup Match coaching duties to be potentially shared between his uncle Manders, Steede and Richardson.Richardson has previous coaching experience at Somerset while Steede and Manders are both former Somerset Cup Match captains.
