The world is a different place

January 13, 2013Dear Sir,My son was going to Canada to school and I decided to accompany him. I had attended school in Canada and had been given what I believed to be unnecessary scrutiny by Canadian Immigration Officials. When I went to Canada for the first time, I was forced to take a chest x-ray even though I had had one done in Bermuda a few months prior to my leaving. On my second visit I had a copy of the X-rays with me but I still had to have another one taken again.Later, when I attended Queens University, Immigration took my passport and sent it to me at the University three weeks later.I had relayed my experiences to my sons of growing up in Bermuda and specifically, of my treatment by Canadian officials. And so I stood back with something of a smirk on my face as we approached Canadian Immigration. The Officer greeted us quite pleasantly and questioned my son as to why he was in Canada. He told her of his acceptance at the University and I waited with great anticipation at the “harassment” which was now to follow. The Officer smiled and pleasantly said: “Welcome to Canada. Have a great time at the University.”I was deflated! My son had a smirk on his face and I, egg on mine!We all have experiences which are ours and ours alone! And while we must teach our children of our past, they really are not those of our children. They will have to learn from their environment themselves as experiences, unfortunately sometimes, are not hereditary.CLEVELYN AJ CRICHLOW
