that he was coerced by Police investigators into making a false statement.

Charles Warren, 25, told Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward that a statement he made on March 5 last year was made because he "wanted to go home''.

Police had threatened to keep him at the station until he gave their version of the truth, he claimed.

Warren testified yesterday that he was on Happy Valley Road, near Marshall's Grocery Store with the accused and two other men when he saw Edwards arguing with Mr. Roy Berger, Lee's brother-in-law.

He said that Berger was the instigator of the fight and Edwards kept attempting to walk away. Berger then hit Edwards in the chest, and the two men began to fight.

He said: "They were scuffling on the ground like boxers.'' Lee was trying to stop the fight, Warren said. Mr. Stanley Barnett was on the opposite side of the road doing his "mumble-jumble''.

One of his statements said that Warren and Lee had discussed the fight and decided what they would say in investigations.

When Crown Counsel Mr. Steven Harrison asked him why the two statements that he made to the Police were contradictory, Warren said: "I was being pressured and they wrote out a statement which I signed. They said that they would not let me go unless I agreed with what they said. I just wanted to go home.'' In other testimony, Mr. Delroy Simpson told the court that he had been with Lee all that day and he and Lee came across Edwards and Berger arguing at Happy Valley Road.

He said both Berger and Barnett seemed to have been drinking and he had heard Berger threaten to chop Edwards with a machete.

While Berger and Edwards fought, Barnett went to hit Edwards with a liquor bottle, and Lee punched him to stop him.

Simpson said he heard that Berger and Barnett were rendered unconscious, and as Simpson's daughter was coming down the hill, he took her away from the scene.

Sgt. Kendrick Lewis testified that he was on the scene to investigate the matter, but that no one in the crowd would give any information.

Detective Constables Calvin Smith and Chris Augustine told the court that they were the arresting officers of both men, and read the statements given to the Police by Lee and Edwards.

Insp. Eustace Farley told the court of his investigations, and read a statement by Lee saying that he was sorry that Barnett died because of the fight, but that it was not his intention to kill anyone.

The case continues on Monday.
