A story in Wednesday's edition about a stealing conviction by a former employee of Harbourfront Restaurant described the man's job as assistant manager. He was a dishwasher.

Referring to the last few months as "madness,'' a 34-year-old man pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to over 35 charges of fraud.

Between April and June, Stephen Andre Wilson was said by Police to have defrauded merchants in various parishes of nearly $16,000 in goods by charging them to the accounts of others. Items ranged from hardware and house paint to drums and cymbals. About one third has been recovered., Wilson also admitted to stealing ten magazines and a motorcycle.

Delaying sentencing until July 13, the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp ordered a Social Inquiry into Wilson's "many, many offences''.

"I think under the circumstances that would be most appropriate,'' she said.

DRUNK DRIVER DISQUALIFIED, FINED CTS A 33-year-old Sandys man was fined $450 in Magistrates' Court this week for driving while impaired.

Tyrone Clarence Simons, of Scotts Hill Road, pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on April 16.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that about 2:15 a.m. Police were travelling east on Middle Road in Warwick when they spotted Simons using his brakes unnecessarily and crossing the centre line. Simons almost collided with the Police because of his reckless driving.

"When Police stopped Simons they noticed he was unsteady on his feet. They also noticed that his breath smelled of liquor, his speech was slurred, and his eyes were glazed,'' Insp. Duffy said.

A breathalyser test revealed Simons had 199 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis also disqualified Simons from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

PRISON FOR WOMAN WHO STOLE $830 CTS A 21-year-old Devonshire woman was sentenced to four months in prison for stealing $830 from a man.

Shelly M. Wilson 21, of Shelton Road pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court this week to stealing.

Prosecuting, Insp. Peter Duffy told the court that on April 29 a baker at Baker's Deli on Union Street heard a noise coming from the employee changing room.

"He went to investigate and found Wilson searching his trousers,'' Insp.

Duffy said.

"The employee took hold of Wilson's arm and called the Police with his free hand.'' He added that a man walked in threatening him and pulled his arm off Wilson, allowing her to run.

Insp. Duffy said that the baker gave a description of the girl to Police and she was later arrested.

"Wilson fully admitted to stealing the baker's wallet containing $830 and also told Police that a friend came to her assistance when she was grabbed by the baker,'' Insp Duffy added.

He also told the court that the money was never recovered and that Wilson had a number of convictions for dishonesty.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis told Wilson: "I am hoping that while you are in the Co-Ed facility you will corporate with Police so they can help get you out of the unfortunate path you have taken.'' He sentenced her to four months in prison to run concurrent with her present sentence which she is serving for previous drug convictions.

GUILTY PLEA TO STEALING FROM EMPLOYER CTS A former assistant manager at the Harbourfront Restaurant in Hamilton pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to stealing from his then employer.

Ormond Raymond Harford, of Brunswick Street in Pembroke, was charged with defrauding MEF Enterprises, parent company of the Front Street restaurant in which he worked as assistant manager, of $405 last April.

According to Police, the money was taken from the restaurant's office on three separate occasions -- $200 on April 22, $100 on April 23 and $105 on April 27.

Ormond was arrested after eight US bills that suspicious company officials had photocopied and left in a safe as a trap were found in his wallet.

After warning Ormond that the type of crime he committed may make it difficult for him to find future work, the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp ordered a social inquiry into the case. She will pass sentence on July 8.

CONDITIONAL DISCHARGE FOR GBH CTS A teenage girl who sent a woman to the hospital was given a 12-month conditional discharge in Magistrates' Court this week.

Melika Nikole Evans 17, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on June 9 and a social inquiry report was ordered by Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis.

Evans, of Curving Avenue in Pembroke, admitted the offence against Neisha Wilson which occurred on the afternoon of May 13 at the Heron Bay Market Place.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, who prosecuted during the first court appearance, said Evans attacked Wilson as she entered the store and knocked her to the ground with her helmet.

She then began kicking and punching Wilson, and as a result Evans gave Wilson a fractured nose.

Mr. Francis told Evans: "Young people today are not much different than they were when I was young. The only difference is when today's youth get angry at someone they will strike them with anything.'' DRUNK DRIVER INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT CTS A 37-year-old Pembroke man was fined $600 in Magistrates' Court this week after he admitted to driving while impaired and failing to stop after an accident.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that around 11 p.m. on June 5, a car travelling west on St. John's Road behind Jose Demeele Pacheco observed him swerving and driving at an inconsistent speed.

Insp. Duffy added that when the driver of the car and Pacheco reached Woodlands Road the car then overtook Pacheco.

The other car later turned off the road and Pacheco, who was still driving unsteadily, collided with the other car sending it through a fence.

"Pacheco did not stay at the accident scene and Police later found him at his home on Spanish Point Road,'' Insp Duffy said.

He added that when Police asked Pacheco about a car parked at his home with a damaged front, he told them it was his.

Police also noticed that Pacheco's breath smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred. They also found him to be unsteady on his feet.

WOMAN FINED $200 FOR DRUG EQUIPMENT CTS A 23-year-old Hamilton woman was fined $200 in Magistrates' Court this week for possessing equipment for drug use.

Kamla Makeba Battersbee, of Crawl Hill, pleaded guilty to possessing a pipe and two pen knifes for drug use.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that on the afternoon of April 9 Battersbee was taken to the Hamilton Police Station on another matter.

"While at the station Battersbee handed Police a yellow cloth bag containing a home made pipe,'' Insp. Duffy said.

And when Police searched her they found two pen knifes, one in her jacket pocket and the other in her sock. All three objects had cocaine residue on them.

Insp. Duffy also told the court that Battersbee had previous charges for possessing drug equipment.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Battersbee $100 for possessing a pipe and $100 for possessing the knives.
