Job Fair 2009 gets underway as hard times loom

Critical training: The Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, David Burch speaks to students during Job Fair 2009 yesterday at the Department of Labour and Training offices in Hamilton. The Ministry is currently hosting the event in an effort to assist local employees in strengthening their workforce techniques and skills.

The Department of Labour is currently hosting Job Fair 2009 to assist employees in strengthening their workforce techniques and skills.

According to Labour, Home Affairs and Housing Minister David Burch, this year's job fair is considered even more urgent, as it will provide specific support for employees coping with the current economic downturn.

Minister Burch said: "Without question, 2009 is proving to be a continuation of 2008, in the sense that the challenges we are facing in the workforce and the economy are serious. In fact we are seeing almost immediate signs of the impact on the job market.

"It was only just this week that the US announced the loss of tens of thousands of jobs for 2009. These are staggering numbers in such a short space of time.

"Here at home, we are seeing that some companies have had to scale down their workforce to cope with the effects of the economic downturn."

Senator Burch said that Government cannot prevent people from losing their jobs, but it is committed to assisting individuals with employment opportunities.

"So the Department of Labour has taken immediate steps to put the necessary mechanisms in place to support members of Bermuda's workforce.

"Part of our stepped-up approach is ensuring that Job Fair 2009 addresses the top agenda concerns resulting from the economic challenges."

The three-day event began Wednesday and continues today, in partnership with various private sector companies.

It is taking place at the Department of Labour and Training at the Ingham and Wilkinson Building in Reid Street near VSB. About 50 individuals are participating.

Some of the courses include job preparation and presentation skills as well as resume writing, job interviewing skills and business etiquette.

Minister Burch added: "Such a training activity during these tough economic times is deemed critical by this Government. And it is our fervent hope to successfully equip employees so that they can meet the needs of employers."
