Entrepreneurs start rum cake maker in Dockyard
The sweet smell of success is rising from a warehouse in Dockyard, where local businesswoman Wendy Avery and her partner Tony Johns have just opened the Bermuda Rum Cake Company.
The new business is located beside the Dockyard Glassworks, which Mrs Avery also manages.
The company was incorporated in July, but started selling cakes in August. An official opening is expected to take place next week.
The micro-bakery and sales area, which also sells takeaway coffee and tea, is in an old Royal Navy warehouse which was formerly used for guns, munition and armaments.
And within the space a mini Bermuda cottage has been built to house the bakery, and the house can be seen from the shop on Maritime Lane.
"I made cakes from 147 different traditional recipes before we came down to the shortlist we now have,'' said Mrs Avery. "We have seven, and we wanted them all to taste old fashioned and homemade.'' The seven cakes come in three sizes, from a large cup cake size to a round which is over two pounds in weight. The flavours are traditional rum cake, chocolate, rum and ginger (dark and stormy), rum swizzle (with fruit), banana and coconut.
The cakes will only be sold in Dockyard and in the Black Seal shop on Front Street.
The store also offers a delivery service to hotels, cruises, offices and homes for between $1 and $2. The service will also deliver any goods bought in Dockyard.
"We are very people orientated up here. And the delivery service is just a part of this. It is just a wonderful Bermuda item and we are very pleased with its launch.'' BUSINESS BUC
