Bermuda Triangle Brewing Limited wants to build a microbrewery in Southampton, and expects to be brewing its first beers by June.

The Development Applications Board gave its approval for the change of use of a former packing warehouse on the SAL estate to the brewery.

But the planners stressed conditions which need to be met before any work begins.

They include provision for parking space, a licence to extract well water and for the disposal of waste water.

The brewers must also get a permit from the Minister of the Environment the Hon. Gerald Simons to build a controlled plant and a licence to operate the plant in accordance with the 1993 Clean Air Regulations. This also regulates the import, use and disposal of controlled chemicals.

The microbrewery will be situated in the warehouse at SAL in Southampton where it is not expected to affect residential areas of the Island.

A previous attempt at starting a brewery was halted by environmental concerns.

Triangle Brewing's founders believe new advances over the past two decades will erase any such fears.

"All of Triangle Brewing's packaging will be reusable or recyclable,'' said a spokesman. "Our packaging will not include any cans.

"The spent grains will be made available to Bermuda's farmers as feed for livestock or as composting material.

"The plant has been designed to incorporate the latest in water conservation and energy recovery technologies.'' In fact, the brewery will not produce its ales on a huge scale with the output expected to be only around 15,000 kegs a year.

The Development Applications Board has also approved a plan for alterations and additions to the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Paget.

The alterations will involve a new meeting room and a revised parking area.
