East End in spotlight

The cultural essence of Bermuda?s East End comes to City Hall theatre tomorrow night when the Department of Cultural and Community Affairs hosts ?St. David?s Night?.

The family event, for which admission is free, will feature a variety of speakers all of whom have connections to St. David?s Island.

According to Mrs. Ronnie Chameau, of the St. David?s Island Historical Society Indian committee, the line-up will include: Mrs. Jeannie Foggo Simon speaking on the connection between North American Indians and St. David?s Islanders geneology. Richard Spurling, president of the St. David?s Island Historical Society, will outline how the organisation began, while Mrs. Barbara Roberts, widow of photographer Freddie Roberts, will present an illustrated talk on St. David?s before the Second World War. Mrs. Chameau?s topic will be ?St. David?s crafts?, when she will be showing and discussing crafts St. David?s women did in their day.

Suzann Holshouser, MP will talk about her St. David?s roots, while Lucinda Spurling will show her film, ?An Island Near Bermuda?.

Tickling the funny bone will be Stuart Hollis as he tells typical St. David?s Island jokes. There will be demonstrations of native dancing by members of the St. David?s Island Indian committee, school children will sing, and Stephen Tucker will have a power point presentation.

Mr Sinclair (Brinky) Tucker will round out the evening with a closing address.

The event will run from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. A special bus will leave from St. David?s Primary School at 6.30 p.m. sharp for those needing transportation, making one stop on the way to Hamilton at Francis Patton School.
