Ernest Gibbons

Funeral services for Ernest David Gibbons, 65, of Columbia and Edisto Island, South Carolina were held last week in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia.

Mr. Gibbons died of a heart attack at his home on Edisto Island. Born in Paget, Bermuda he was the son of the late Ernest Frederick Gibbons and Olive Patterson Gibbons. He attended the Saltus Grammar School and graduated from Mount St. Agnes Academy. He was a graduate of Palm Beach College and the University of South Carolina.

Mr. Gibbons was an officer of the Citizens and Southern National Bank for many years, leaving to enter medical management consulting.

At the time of his death, he managed physicians? relations for Providence Hospital. Although he retained his Bermudian nationality, he served with distinction in the South Carolina Air National Guard for six years.

Mr. Gibbons was very involved in the community and brought a love of life and joy to all he met. He was chairman of the Southeastern affiliate of the American Heart Association and served on the board of the local affiliate for many years.

He was a charter member and former president of the St. Andrews Society of Columbia; a member of the Lake Forest Yacht Club, the Town Club, the Columbia Sertoma Club, the Cotillion and the Edisto Island Yacht Club. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia, where he served on the vestry and as a chairman of the every member canvas. He was also a friend and loyal supporter of Trinity Episcopal Church, Edisto Island.

Mr. Gibbons is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cornelia (Nea) Danforth Gibbons, two daughters and sons-in-law, Caroline Gibbons Williams and Richard Taylor Wiliams MD of Columbia and Cornelia (Nea) Danforth Gibbons and Chad Lee McKeehan of Denver, Colorado, three beloved grandsons, David Pierce Williams, Stuart Montgomery Williams and Gordon Douglas Danforth McKeehan, a brother Howard Gordon Gibbons of Paget, Bermuda, his golden retriever Bermuda Mango Chutney and his many wonderful friends.
