Netball team toppled by N.Ireland
Birmingham, England, going down 59-48 to Northern Ireland in the consolation bracket.
Of the 48 goals, Debbie DeShields scored 41 from 56 shots while goal attack Wenda Godfrey, the vice captain, netted seven from 13 attempts.
Bermuda had a slow start to the match, allowing Northern Ireland to go ahead 12-2, although the gap was closed as the first quarter ended with the Irish 15-9 in front.
Northern Ireland led 22-13 by the end of the second quarter.
DeShields scored eight goals in the first two quarters, 15 in the third and 10 in the fourth.
Bermuda started the match with Nicolle DeGraffe as goalkeeper, Petti Tucker goal defence, Rhonda Rawlins wing defence, Debbie Smith centre, Vernell Flood wing attack and Godfrey and DeShields as goal attack and shooter.
In the third quarter, Rawlins and Smith switched positions while in the fourth quarter Sheena Maybury came on for Flood at wing attack.
"Bermuda has had its moments of playing good netball and there are times when play becomes erratic,'' said coaches Colette Thomson and Carol Bean in a statement. "They fought hard but were not able to close the gap as a result of the first quarter.'' The condition of the court surfaces has left a number of teams with injuries to players. Nina Webb is out through injury while DeGraffe collapsed on court during the Scotland game and had to be taken off. She missed the Sri Lanka game the next day.
Bermuda have now played four matches in their consolation group, losing three and winning one. Their final group match is against Namibia today. The tournament finishes on Saturday and the team return on Sunday evening.
