Russell looks to smash 30 goal barrier

Hotshot Dennis Russell is enjoying one of the those seasons every striker dreams of.The 29-year old Southampton Rangers poacher has banged in 27 goals in all competitions so far this term.Russell is just three goals shy of becoming the first striker to score 30 or more goals in a season in the Premier Division since Kyle Lightbourne achieved the feat in the early 1990s.“That’s definitely something I’d love to do,” said Russell, who has scored consecutive hat-tricks in his team’s two previous matches against Robin Hood and Flanagan’s Onions.The seasoned player attributes his prolific form this season to the “hard work” he has put into training and his passion for the game.“I am really enjoying my football and I train hard,” he said. “I just play hard and I love what I do. I don’t play football, I do football and that’s my philosophy.”Having the firm backing of his teammates has also motivated Russell to do what he does best ... put the ball into the back of the net.“My teammates are very supportive and they’re always encouraging me which helps to boost my confidence and I love the feeling,” he said.Rangers player-coach Marvin Belboda said Russell is receiving just reward for the hard work he puts into training.“Dennis is a hard worker so he’s just receiving he fruits of his labour,” he added. “He has come on in leaps and bounds and is starting to come into his own.”Belboda reckons the best is yet to come from the powerful striker.“I see a lot in Dennis and feel he has a lot more to give,” he said. “Dennis is definitely a striker that everybody would want.”Belboda said Russell’s teammates will do their best to help the striker reach the 30 goal milestone during Rangers’ remaining games of the season.“We know what goal he is aiming for so we are going to try and supply him,” he said. “The team is definitely behind him.”Rangers are enjoying one of their best seasons in the top flight in recent memory.The South Shore club are presently sixth in the Premier Division with two matches remaining against Somerset Trojans and newly crowned league champions Devonshire Cougars.They have also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup which they haven’t won since the 1983-84 campaign.Rangers will face Cougars in the second FA Cup semi-final at Goose Gosling Field on March 30 — six days following the two teams’ league finale at Southampton Oval.The Big Cats are gunning for the coveted triple crown having already clinched league and Friendship Trophy honours.But standing in their way is a Rangers side keen to avenge two losses to Cougars earlier this season.“We definitely owe them something,” Russell declared.Belboda added: “They are going for the triple crown which is a good goal to go for. But we are in their way and will try our best to upset them.”
