Man fined $5,500 for violent arrest, drug charges

A man who admitted assaulting several Police officers, resisting arrest and drug possession has been fined instead of a prison sentence.

Troy Bremar, of Beacon Hill, Sandys, pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting Police officers, violently resisting arrest, possession of cannabis and ecstasy. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told the defendant he seemed remorseful but said assaulting police was an extremely serious matter.

Bremar was fined $1,000 and given a three-month suspended sentence for each of the assaults. For violently resisting arrest, he was fined $500. And for the drug charges, the defendant was fined $1,000 for each charge.

Magistrates' Court heard from Crown counsel Larissa Burgess that, on May 10, officers were on duty at Arnold's Supermarket.

Bremar was talking to another man and when he saw the officers, he tried to run away. When the 38-year-old was caught, he pushed one cop, and was pepper sprayed. Bremar punched and kicked several officers before he was subdued and searched.

During the search, officers found in his right front pants pocket two small plastic twists with one containing plant like material, later identified as cannabis, and two small packets inside the other twist containing an off white substance later identified as ecstasy.

Bremar apologised to the court and denied he had punched or kicked the officers. "It was for personal use. I was just trying something new. I was in the party mood. I was tapped. It was my birthday two days before," he said.
