Keeping memories alive Singer Rochelle to headline tribute to Island’s musical icons and Michael Jackson
If you’ve ever busted a dance move to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ or belted out a high note to ‘You Are Not Alone’, then an upcoming tribute concert might be right up your alley.Local songstress Rochelle Simons Lecomte will be singing a collection of Michael Jackson hits at an event at the Fairmont Southampton on September 29. She will also be honouring some of the Island’s past entertainers like Ghandi Burgess, Hubert Smith and the Talbot Brothers through a rendition of ‘Gone Too Soon’.Mrs Simons Lecomte believes this will be a great night out and encouraged people to support local talent.“I just want them to come out and have a great time and get captured in the moment and keep the memories alive of our deceased entertainers and also Michael’s. That is what I want.”She will be performing a 70s medley and attendees are welcome to come out in attire from that era. Prizes will be on offer, including a weekend stay at Pompano Beach and dinner-for-two at Ascot’s Restaurant in Pembroke.Mrs Simons Lecomte grew up listening to music from Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. She admitted she was “floored” by his talent, even at a young age, and said the entertainer made a huge impact on her life.“I remember sitting around the stereo at a very young age around eight, nine or ten and singing at the top of my lungs with Michael’s music, so I feel we have this bond.“He was a true entertainer. Everyone knows that he was a genius and brilliant at what he did so I totally admired him for that. He was a perfectionist and I am the same way.“Michael passed on, so I said ‘what other way to pay tribute to our deceased with his music and kill two birds with one stone’.”Mrs Simons Lecomte began singing at age seven, when she was mentored by gospel singer Jean-Anne McConnie. Ms McConnie helped to professionally groom the youngster and gave her the opportunity to open for her gospel group, the Upper Room Quintet, whenever they performed on the Island.“When I reached ten-years-old I joined up with one of my siblings Winnifred Simons, that was around the time when Aunt Nell, had the junior club on ZBM every week,” Mrs Simons Lecomte said.“She would have a talent contest for the dancers and singers, so my sister and I danced to the Beatles song ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. I have been a fan of the Beatles ever since. Jean-Anne was our choreographer for that.”She began her recording career at age 13, when she and sister Mary Maybury were featured on a record for entertainment group the Mello Tones.Nine years later Mrs Simons Lecomte moved to the United States and became one of the first Bermudian women to be signed to a major record label, Warner Brothers, in the 1980s.The singer said living overseas really took her talent and level of determination to the next level. “I adopted the way of the Americans as to how to do things in life. It made me a stronger person, made me the person I am and taught me how to deal with things a lot better.”She said she was looking forward to hosting a tribute concert like this every other year. The next show will honour legendary singers Whitney Houston and Donna Summer, both of whom recently died.Other hosts and entertainers taking part in next weekend’s event, include Rovonne Roberts, Patrina Paynter, Stevie Darrell, Steve Easton, Verlancia Aberdeen and others. The Seventh Day Adventist Praise Team and Keya Dancers will be taking to the stage, while background singers for the evening will include Sheila Smith, Chandra Maybury and Steve Easton. There will be cocktails for VIP ticket holders from 6pm until 7pm.Mrs Simons Lecomte said: “It will be a great experience for them. Bermudians don’t seem to go anywhere that much anymore and I think it would be a great opportunity for them to come out and let their hair down.“I think this will be a worthwhile cause for people to come out and see the best of our local entertainers.”Tickets, $80 or $120 for VIP, are available at Secrets and the Edge in the Washington Mall, 27th Century on Reid Street, Family Affair Boutique in the Cedarparkade and Caesar’s Pharmacy in Somerset.
