Majority oppose Bermuda independence - poll

The majority of voters remain opposed to Independence, according to a recent poll.Seventy-three percent of persons surveyed by Mindmaps said they were against such a move.The figure is the same as in an October survey.As before, 14 percent of those canvassed said they were in support, while 13 percent said they didn't know.Opposition is highest among younger people: 76 percent of 18 to 34-year-old voters said they were against Bermuda cutting ties with the UK.Demographically, more white respondents (86 percent) opposed Independence than black voters (64 percent); women were more against Independence than men 76 percent versus 71 percent.Only two percent of the 65 and older age bracket mentioned Independence in a ranking of the biggest issues facing Bermuda in the past three months.The January 10 to 19 poll surveyed 400 Bermudians aged 18 and over. It has a 4.9 percent margin of error.
