Mile racing drama for juniors turns to Botanical Gardens

The drama of the Front Street Mile will be re-enacted at the Botanical Gardens this weekend for young athletes in the inaugural KPMG Round the Grounds Mile race.

A mile course has been designed within the Gardens and is the second in the 2008 Junior Running Series, which sees competitors perform two track events and one cross country.

The Front Street Mile trials at National Sports Centre in December formed the first race of the series, with runners awarded points according to their placing.

In the eight to ten category Paul Smith, who triumphed in last week's Mile, is expected to continue his tussle with Justin Ferreira. While there is a strong trio of runners in the girls eight to ten group, featuring Aaliyah Nolan, Jordan Bascome and Dezhane West.

Dage Minors and Nakeno Creighton are sure to be battling it out in the boys 11-12 category, but will be under pressure from Matthew Betteto, Kyle Webb and Conor Smith.

Kyla Bolden's main challengers will be Jazmine Outerbridge and Shuntae Hendrickson. So far in the series, Bolden is ranked number one with Hendrikson second and Outerbridge third.

In the 13-15 age group Samuel Hewitt is in lead position with Ryan Furbert second and Shaquille Dill third, based on their times in last month's trials.

The girls section will see Ashley Berry compete with Taylor Ashley Bean and Megan Berry. All three athletes have already qualified for the Carifta Games in March.

Runners have until 4:45 p.m on Friday January 25, to submit their entries. Late entries will not be accepted on race day. The Round the Ground's race is organised by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club and starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
