has been sentenced to nine months in prison for stealing.

Delvin Ashley O'Brian Stevens, 25, appeared in Magistrates' Court this week for clarification on how long he should remain in Casemates.

"The judge sentenced me to nine months,'' Stevens said. "But when I got to Casemates, they said 18 months.'' Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp said her records showed Stevens was to serve a nine month sentence. As for any other nine months, "you'll have to sort it out with the admissions people at Casemates,'' she said.

Stevens had been charged with stealing $1,000 from Terri Burgess on June 25.

His trial had been set for Tuesday, but he earlier entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to the nine-month term.

HOTEL RAIDED CRM Police are investigating a break-in at Belmont Hotel in which more than $1,600 worth of liquor was stolen.

Thieves forced their way into a storeroom at the basement of the hotel on Tuesday night, Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said.

The theft of alcohol appeared to be the motive of another break-in that night at a residence on Cut Road in St. George's.

A liquor cabinet was forced open and several bottles of an unknown value were stolen.

However, P.c. Venning said the two incidents were not thought to be related.

A Smith's Parish man also reported that someone entered his Verdmont Valley home through an insecure window on Tuesday evening and made off with about $600 in $1 coins.

The money was kept in a gallon glass jar.

That same evening a thief entered a room at a Paget guest house through an open sliding glass door and took $265 from a visitor's handbag while she slept.

CHANGE OF NAME CTS The Committee on Philanthropy has changed its name. The organisation, launched in May of 1992 and registered as a charity five months later, is now known as the Centre on Philanthropy.

In a newsletter, the Centre said the name change reflected "its broader and more interactive role in Bermuda.'' Some felt the word "committee'' suggested "a small, exclusive group,'' but "our desired concept is of a large number of diverse entities interacting, networking, and acting as a coalition,'' the newsletter said.

The Centre is a resource organisation that provides information about the non-profit sector. It encourages volunteerism and non-profit initiatives.

SWIM CASH CALL FNR The 1993 Round-the-Sound Swimathon has so far raised $10,000 from the October 10 event. But there remains a lot of pledge money that has not yet been submitted.

Organisers are reminding participants that the pledge deadline is Tuesday at 5 p.m. when the money raised will be donated to Boy Scouts and Girl Guides at St. Mark's Church Hall, Smith's.

A majority of the 174 participants in the staggered swim have still not handed in their money. The money is to be used for recreational installations for the Guides and Scouts at Hog Bay Park.

CYCLE FOUND CRM Police have found a nearly new girl's red and white 10-speed pedal cycle which is believed to have been stolen.

While no one has reported it missing, Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said anyone who has recently lost a pedal cycle fitting the above description should call the Community Relations Department at 295-0011.

Proof of ownership or a more detailed description of the cycle will be required before it can be released.

OFF THE ROAD CTS Shawn A. Simmons, 22, admitted driving while disqualified in Magistrates' Court yesterday and was taken off the road for a year. Simmons, of Sunnyside Park, Southampton, was also fined $350 for the November 3 offence.
