Smith, Richardson outclass rivals
Triathlon Championships as Karen Smith and Kent Richardson once again dominated the field with emphatic victories.
But the cash bonus offered by sponsors for anyone breaking the two hour barrier, as expected, was never in any danger of being collected.
Smith exited the 750-metre swim as first female and extended the gap over the challenging 40 kilometre wet and windy bike course to take a commanding lead into the run.
With an impressive 10K run, Smith finished well ahead in the women's division in two hours, 21 minutes, 24 seconds and took second place overall.
Kim Mason with an exceptional bike ride took second place among the females and Lea Butterfield, who continues to improve, finished third.
In the men's race, Richardson exited the water in second place behind teenager Nick Taylor, but took the lead for good with the fastest 40K bike split of the day.
After the blistering ride, he struggled early on the 10K run but had enough in the tank to extend his lead over Andrew Davis, his nearest challenger in second place. Richardson clocked 2:15.12.
David Ferguson with a strong overall performance took third place in the division.
Other divisional winners on the men's side included Jason Krupp (16-29), Aaron Smith (30-39) and Jim Butterfield (40-plus).
Women's divisional winners were Ashley Robinson-Roberts (16-29) in her first Olympic Distance triathlon, Liz Wyllie (30-39) and Carolyn Conway (40-plus).
Overall team winners were the trio of swimmer Alison Petty, cyclist Tyler Butterfield and runner Debbie Butterfield.
In the beginner's Try-A-Tri race, Page Grundmuller was victorious in the women's event, while Greg Reid took the men's division after a strong run.
The 13 to 15 year-old juniors competed over a 300-metre swim, 15K bike and 3K run.
Matthew Herring and Flora Duffy emerged as the male and female overall champions.
This was great result for Duffy as she returned from a broken elbow that had kept her out of competition following a bike crash in mid-summer.
It was in the 11-12 year-old's 200-metre swim, 10K bike and 2K run where the biggest time bonus award of the day was won -- Tyler Scott emerging as the boys' champion and earning himself $200 in the bargain.
The 11-12 year-old girls' champion was Ally Bolton.
