Track club flying high after Miami triumph
The Flyers and Pacers Track Clubs came back to Bermuda with their heads high after a successful visit to The Northeast Track and Field meet in Miami over the weekend.
The two track clubs travelled to the meet in Florida, with the Flyers taking 15 athletes and Pacers carrying eight.
Bermuda's athletes competing against the best in the United States at the meet, claiming a total of 21 medals.
The haul of 21 medals included six golds, six silver and nine bronze. Justin Donawa picked up one gold and two bronze medals to lead the medal charge, while Victoria Clarke, Ashley Berry, Deanne Lightbourne and Megan Berry all claimed two apiece.
"Overall the athletes performed well", said Flyers coach Donna Watson. "As you can see from the results we came out pretty good from a placing perspective."
"The meet was much more competitive in the 100 to 400 metre sprints. They had several rounds to go through in those events.
"The children making it to the finals was good. The organisation of the meet was terrible with Saturday being 5 hrs behind schedule, making it even a greater accomplishment making it to the finals.
"Some outstanding performances were Victoria Clarke, after going through several rounds placing second in both the 100 and 200 metres. Deanne Lightbourne placing first in the 800 and third in the 400.
"Dage Minors placing third in the 1500 and second in the 3000 metres. Emmanuel Smith ran a good 1500 metres to place first in that event. Justin Donawa of Pacers placed third in 100m and 200m and first in Long Jump."
