Sprinter Place and swimmers in podium glory

Sprinter Jeneko Lottimore Place and the swim relay team added to Bermuda's medal haul last night completing a successful second day of competition for the 70-strong squad at the Island Games.

After the gymnasts had struck gold in the morning, Place collected silver at the Wiklof Holding Arena with a second-place finish in the final of the 200 metres.

He clocked 21.65 seconds, improving on his morning semi-final time of 21.88 when he also finished second.

In that same semi, veteran Xavier James failed to advance to the final, placing fifth in 22.48.

The 200 gold went to Caymans' Robert Ibeh (21.60).

Women's 400 metres runner Stephane Schoeman reached today's final after taking second in heat three of the morning qualifiers in 58.87 seconds.

Earlier in the 800 metres, Stephen Allen came home sixth in 2:04.14 in heat two of the qualifiers and Anton Velleman fourth in heat three in 2:03.77, both failing to advance.

In the swimming pool at the Idrottscenter, it was the 4x50 metres freestyle team of Rebecca Heyliger, Morgan Hopkins and the Yearwood sisters, Ashley and Nicole, who led the way for Bermuda, collecting a bronze medal as they clocked one minute, 49.10 seconds, smashing the previous Games record as did gold medallists Faroe Islands (1:47.19) and silver medallists Jersey (1:48.32).

Hopkins also reached the final of the 50m breaststroke where she finished seventh in 35.85, improving on her heat time of 36.13.

Nicole Yearwood took sixth place in the final of the 100 metres butterfly in 1:07.84, two seconds faster than her heat time.

VOLLEYBALL

Bermuda's women's team wasted little time disposing of the tiny Norwegian island of Hitra, claiming a straightforward three-set victory, 25-8, 25-16, 25-13 to continue their march towards the medal round.

Victory over winless Guernsey today should further enhance their chances.

However, medal hopes for the men's team virtually disappeared as they suffered a straight sets loss to Greenland, 20-25, 25-27, 19-25, having gone down to Gibraltar a day earlier.

SAILING

Bermuda's five sailors remain on course to add to the team's medal tally after four races, with six more remaining.

The Laser class entries, Malcolm Smith, Brett Wright, Sara Lane Pantovic Adderley and Rockal Evans, have all enjoyed a fruitful opening to the regatta and in the team event, which has attracted 10 entries, they are currently in the gold medal position with 25 points, three less than second-placed Aland.

Bermuda's lone sailboarder, Alex Jones, is also making his presence felt on the waters off Mariehamn's Eastern Harbour as he has moved into third place among the 21 competitors, posting finishes of third, fifth, ninth and fourth for a total of 21. Only two Menorcans have fared better. In the two Laser classes, Bermuda's sailors all endured a disappointing finish yesterday in the fourth race but will still be eyeing a medal.

Malcolm Smith is fifth in a fleet of 24 with 32 points (10-7-4-11) in the Laser standard rig class and is closely followed by compatriot Brett Wright in seventh who got off to a flying start with finishes of sixth, fifth and fourth only to slip back as he placed 20th in the last race yesterday. He's on 35 points.

In the Laser radial rig class, Adderley (12-3-3-16 — 34pts) and Evans (6-6-5-18 — 35pts) are sixth and seventh respectively, although they too dropped back after finishes of 16th and 18th in the fourth race.

BASKETBALL

Bermuda's men's team continued their march to the final, rolling over Jersey 100-33 to finish top of Group Three and guarantee a spot in the medal play-offs later this week. On Sunday they had defeated a much stronger Cayman Islands 82-71.

ARCHERY

Mid-way through the singles FITA recurve event, Paul Harshaw lies 30th out of 36 in the men's competition and Roslyn Kneeland, still recovering from a broken foot, is 15th in the 16-strong women's entry. Harshaw fired from 90 metres and 70 metres yesterday, and will today compete from 50 metres and 30 metres. Kneeland, firing from 70m and 60m yesterday, completes the event over 50m and 30m.

SHOOTING

Anthony Evans and Ross Roberts were listed to compete in the two-man 50 metres Prone Smallbore Rifle Team event yesterday but Roberts pulled out leaving Evans to use the competition as practice.

He posted a score of 561 and placed last out of nine entries with other teams all combining two scores.
