Naude springs 5K upset
Front Street Mile winner Evan Naude, who smashed Mike Watson?s record in lifting last month?s title, claimed another major scalp yesterday as he outkicked top road runner Jay Donawa to win the annual Butterfield and Vallis 5K.
Naude romped home in 15 minutes and 42 seconds, leaving Donawa, who was first local in both last month?s International 10K and Half-Marathon, six seconds adrift.
Lamont Marshall placed third in 15.48 in a race which attracted almost all of the Island?s leading runners, while Evan?s twin brother Riaan took fourth (16.05).
Donawa?s brother Michael followed in 16.39, with former Mile winner Sheldon Thompson in sixth (17.03) and marathoner Kavin Smith (17.11) having to settle for a rare place outside the top three.
The ladies? race also saw an upset as Victoria Fiddick (18.51) outfought Lynn Patchett (19.02) with Anna Eatherley, the first Master, placing third in 19.47.
In the 12 and under races over 1.6 miles ? the second event in the current KPMG Road Running Series ? Trey Simons and Jazmine Outerbridge were the respective boys? and girls? winners.
