Waterloo House to close next month
After announcing the closure of Waterloo House in December, it is only a matter of weeks until those historic doors are closed forever.
According to manager David Woodhead, the award-winning guest house and restaurant will serve its last customers on July 29, though the building's future is not yet certain.
A planning application stated the long-standing building would be demolished and a new office building with lower level parking will be put up in its place.
However, Mr. Woodhead was under the impression that the building had not been sold, and could only confirm that the building would remain closed after July.
"As of now, the only thing we are sure of is that the last guest will depart on the 29th of July... and after that it will be closed until further notice, until it is sold," he said.
Staff of the guest house were informed about the closure at the end of last year.
Since then, all employees have been provided with the option of employment at Waterloo's sister accommodations: Horizon Cottages and Coral Beach Club.
"Nobody will be left unemployed, There will be positions for everyone," said Mr. Woodhead.
Though the 30-bedroom hotel has won numerous awards and was named one of the best in the Caribbean by Travel and Leisure Magazine, it was not profitable for Horizon Ltd. to continue ownership, he explained.
The 200-year-old guest house is not protected by the Bermuda National Trust, though it is highly revered by locals and visitors alike.
Mr. Woodhead hoped whoever took over the building would be able to maintain part of the main building's integrity and history.
