Goals, but still no winner
Drama, adventure and plenty of action! Last night's FA Cup semifinal replay between Dandy Town and Boulevard had it all, as both sides refused to die in a electrifying 3-3 draw at Devonshire Rec.
"Tonight was what the FA Cup is all about...it brings back memories from when I was a player ,'' said Boulevard coach Gary Mallory, after twice watching his men blow leads against a determined Town outfit.
On the other side Mark Trott of Town was flabbergasted by the way his men responded to adversity.
"I'm absolutely speechless,'' said Trott. "Tonight my team showed that they wanted it really bad.'' Town clawed their way back from 2-0 down in the second half to force overtime and then again responded after going behind 3-2.
The Blazers looked to have things sealed when Kenny Hill and Dwight Warren gave them a two goal lead well into the second half.
But George Dyer and Walter Musson each tallied to draw the match even as Town attacked vigorously late in the game.
Boulevard were reduced to playing a man short near the end of regulation when referee Rex Osborne ejected Neil (Diamond) Robinson for a flagrant foul.
However, it was they who seized the initiative in overtime with Boyles scoring, only to have Neil Paynter come right back and equalise.
"This is incredible! The final will be played next year!'' exclaimed one fan.
Even referee Osborne was involved in the action and required treatment in the match for a sore right knee.
Town were a little more forceful in their early attacks, showing the Boulevard defence to be vulnerable.
Paul Cann hit the crossbar from eight yards in the 15th minute after he had latched onto a superb through-ball from midfielder Pernell Douglas.
With Lionel Furbert seemingly having free rein along the right side and Musson a terror on the left, Boulevard appeared overawed by the zeal exhibited by their opponents.
And when skipper Albert Smith was stretchered off after 21 minutes, with suspected ligament damage to his left knee, the situation was not encouraging.
But it was at this point that the Blazers picked their game up and burst ahead seven minutes later when a ball from Robinson found Warren free on the left and he advanced before crossing to an onrushing Hill for him to place a firm volley past goalkeeper Ricky Tucker.
In the 62nd minute Warren looked to have sealed his side a spot in the final by eluding a poorly set offside trap to collect and plant the ball past a hopelessly exposed Tucker.
Ten minutes hence Town started their fight-back through Dyer, who sneaked behind the defence and lobbed the ball over the head of an advancing Mitchell Steede, drawing Town within one.
Musson brought them all the way back 14 minutes from time, driving home a left wing cross by Campbell.
Boyles bundled a back-header from Hill over the line to make it 3-2 only to see Paynter equalise from a Paul Cann corner to force another replay.
