Do you know what your children are looking at on social media?
Thanks to Rebecca Hanson at AAC Saatchi & Saatchi for giving Young Observer a heads up that it is Social Media Week across the pond in New York.Young Observer jumped straight on it and challenged some students to a week without social media. We are pleased to include one of the journals and thoughts from the courageous students that took the challenge.More importantly, as a parent, for our adult readers I must report on how surprised no shocked I have been on what I found out since reporting on social media week with the youth of Bermuda.I am pleased to report that Facebook is still live and well among the youth of Bermuda! However, little did I know that I was so far behind the times. I haven’t been tweeting the past couple of years but am quite aware of the site. When friends and/or students talk about social media my normal response is “sure I love Facebook and am starting to tweet”.That said, having just come from a youth news school class talking to students about social media for this report, I realise how far behind the times I am.Every hand went up when asked if the students are on social media daily.I assumed that meant Facebook and Twitter. But no, one of the common social media sites among the youth of Bermuda is Tumblr or Pinterest.Back at the office, I thought I should just jump in and join Tumblr and Pinterest myself. The sign up process was very easy to complete; after a couple of simple questions: e-mail address and password, I was asked to type in my interests for the sign up process.I typed in my interest as “architecture”.Ten seconds later to my surprise I found a raunchy video popping up on my screen! My advice for any parents reading this article: please talk to your children about social media and definitely find out what they are looking at whilst they are on line.I would go as far as to suggest sign up to these sites yourself and see with your own eyes.
