Island pair strike gold at Carifta

Morgan Hopkins and Rebecca Sharpe struck gold as Bermuda continued their impressive showing at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Aruba yesterday.

Hopkins won the 200 metres backstroke by a comfortable seven seconds while Sharpe re-wrote the record books as she claimed gold in the 50 metres backstroke.

Sharpe's time was a new personal best and set a Carifta and Bermuda 17-18 age group record.

The 50m backstroke event saw four other Bermudian swimmers involved in the finals. Ashley Yearwood and Emma Franklin finished fourth and fifth respectively in the girls' 13 and 14 age group while Nicole Yearwood claimed sixth place in the 15 to 17 division.

Nick Thomson finished seventh in the senior boys' age group.

The Yearwood sisters also swam in the 100 metres butterfly with Ashley placing seventh and Nicole taking eighth.

The senior girls competed in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay with the team of Sharpe, Nicole Yearwood, Stephanie Myles and Rebecca Heyliger finishing in fifth place.

Earlier this week in the Caribbean meet, Bermuda's Jason Mastalir smashed Michael Cash's long-standing 1500 metres freestyle record (17:30.46) when he was timed in 16:59.93.

That was also a new Carifta record for the 17-18 age group, erasing the previous best time by almost a minute.
