Village on target again with charity donation
Only days after helping generate funds for local charity PALS in the Charity Cup Final against Dandy Town, champions North Village have handed over cash for another worthy cause ? the family of former club player Derek Bell who died two years ago in a freak boating accident in St.George's.
During a brief presentation outside this week, Village president Shervin Dill and PHC Raiders striker Keith Bell presented $2,000 to the Derek Bell Memorial Education Fund.
The money had been collected during the second annual Derek Bell Memorial Match held in April of this year at Bernard Park.
"This is what North Village Community Club is all about. We like to provide opportunities, particularly for members of the community, outside of the realms of sport," explained Dill.
"We are now looking forward to having the event get bigger and better and I would like to thank all of the participants and donators.
"Every player paid $20s to put on a pair of boots and we are also very grateful for our affiliate clubs (Devonshire Colts, PHC and St.George's) and the female teams that helped to make the annual event another success."
This year's matches saw a female Bermuda Select, led by Nakita Dill who banged home six goals, trounce the Island's Under-17 national team 8-0.
Commercial team Devonshire All-Stars then outscored St.George's All-Stars 4-2 before Village Rams successfully defended the cup with a 5-2 win over Raiders in the day's feature match.
Cousin of the deceased, Keith Bell, who helped organise the event, thanked all those who contributed to "this worthy cause".
"First of all, as Derek was my cousin, it was an honour to be on the organising committee for the event and I was very pleased with the outcome," said Bell. "I would also like to thank all the participants who took part and hope that next year we can make the event even more enjoyable and PHC will finally win the cup."
Bell, a former Bermuda national team, Village and Hotels International defender, is survived by his wife Kim and children Cheyra, Tahj and Detre.
