Holders leave it late

Dozy Dandy Town took their fingers off the snooze button just in time to retain their hold on the Martonmere Cup, scoring twice in four dramatic minutes of stoppage time to oust Vasco at Somerset last night.

Darron Simons rose unmarked in the 47th minute of the second half to head home off the underside of the bar, equalising Chris Anderson's goal eight minutes from time which looked to have put Vasco into the final.

Then, Mark Trott's sleepy side suddenly swept forward like they had been collectively injected with some illegal substance, forced a corner on the left, and Burton Bruce, a substitute in the 77th minute, headed an excellent winner against his old club.

New-look Vasco will have felt aggrieved as they made the better chances in a flowing game.

Anderson might have opened the scoring twice in the first 20 minutes, hitting the outside of the post first when he raced on to Albert Caisey's through ball just three minutes into the match and again 17 minutes later after Dwight Basden had outpaced a defender down the left and slotted a teasing cross to the far side of the six-yard area.

Town hit the woodwork as well, Devarr Boyles rattling the bar with a 30-yard effort that came out of nowhere in the ninth minute.

But in the main they were reduced to half-chances as their laid-back approach work failed to create many clear openings.

When it did, Reggie Tucker picked out Seyoum Tuzo's run into the right side of the penalty area with a fine pass, but Tuzo saw his shot well saved by Timmy Figureido at the foot of the post.

Basden, full of running and displaying no little skill, was enjoying the opportunity to run at former team-mate Earl Richardson, and three minutes after the interval he was unlucky not to score.

The Bermuda striker shrugged off four challenges before unleashing a low shot which Jason Smith spilled for a corner.

Basden was withdrawn in the 70th minute with what appeared to be a hamstring twinge and almost immediately Anderson took on more responsibility, a curling shot from wide on the right being well clutched by Smith.

But he finally got on the scoresheet in the 82nd minute, sliding in on the far post to volley home a cross from Ant Tyrrell that was just out of Smith's reach.
