Guatemalans cruising
International Open Championships by storm, surging into the finals of both the men's singles and doubles.
Erichson manhandled Bermuda number two Randy Brangman in the singles quarter-finals, winning 15-6, 15-0, before dispatching of another Bermudian, Steve Wellman 15-2, 15-6 in the semifinals to earn his place.
The latter match witnessed Wellman succumb under relentless pressure from the Caribbean's top player, who wore down his opponent with long rallies and sent him scurrying about the court.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Altalef similarly brushed aside his challengers. He first defeated Briton Colin Roach 15-0, 15-2 and then, using the advantage of youth, dominated former Bermuda number one, Harold Minors -- 19 years his senior -- 15-0, 15-8.
Minors was constantly baffled by the finesse of the youngster, who produced several deft drop shots, and went down without much of a fight in the first game. But playing for pride in the second, the local showed true grit in robbing Altalef of eight points, the most he has given up in the tournament thus far.
The results set up an intriguing final today, pitting the pair against one another. The 20-year-old Erichson though is the firm favourite, having already beaten Altalef twice.
However, they are set to team up for the doubles, where they take on Minors and Brangman.
Meanwhile, number four seeds in the mixed doubles, Brangman and Shonette Wilson, were jolted by the British team of Colin and Christine Roach at the quarter-final stage 15-8, 15-9.
Two teams are thus left carrying the Bermuda banner, with Kenny Bremar and Claire Norbury surviving two agonisingly close encounters, while Junior and Julie Durrant had a much smoother ride into the last four.
All finals are slated for today starting at 6 p.m.
