Futuristic clipper sets sail today
Got a spare $420,000? If so, you've got just about enough to charter the futuristic-looking luxury clipper which sailed into St. George's last week.
The cash would only get you a week on-board The Maltese Falcon but it might well be worth it.
The stunning 289ft vessel — owned by American venture capitalist Tom Perkins — is described on its website as a new class of yacht with a "revolutionary sailing system", known as a Falcon Rig.
The Maltese-registered boat, reported to have cost more than $150 million, has three electronically controlled rotating masts with 15 sails measuring more than 25,000 sq ft, an on-board "hotel" with gourmet chef for 12 guests and a top speed of 19.5 knots. The clipper, which has an international crew of 18, arrived at Ordnance Island on Friday evening from St. Martin and is due to leave today for the Azores.
Captain Christopher Gartner wrote in his online log on Thursday that the boat had just sailed through its 60,000 nautical mile mark, three years after she first touched water in Turkey.
He wrote that The Maltese Falcon's five-month Caribbean season had come to an end after visiting St. Barts, the British Virgin Islands and Barbados, sailing to the west of the Windward Islands to reach St. Martin for an emergency detour for supplies.
"During this time we set and furled our sails a total of 12 times in less than 12 hours, motoring when we had to and sailing at every chance we had."
He added: "Once we left St. Martin we have been sailing along at 14 knots right on course for Bermuda in 20 to 24 knots of true wind — what a pleasure!"
