A Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation spokesman, which is responsible for their upkeep, said courts one, two and three will be converted from clay to courts with all-weather surfaces.

And two of the existing all-weather courts will be repaired.

"The end result will be five all-weather courts and three clay courts,'' the spokesman said.

The courts, which were last upgraded in 1971, will close daily at 6 p.m. until further notice.

The department also announced that a new fence will be erected at the Royal Naval Field in Somerset this month to prevent unauthorised access by vehicles.

The work will begin within three weeks. But pedestrian access to the field will be maintained.
