Scott moves into Somerset hot seat
The winds of change ushered in a new president and executive committee during Somerset Cricket Club?s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday night.
After pondering retirement from Premier Division football at the end of last season ? and watching Trojans? bid for an eighth Martonmere Cup title go up in smoke from the bench earlier this month ? Richard Scott has assumed an even greater role at the West End club, succeeding Colin Smith in the top post.
Scott, 35, convincingly beat out challenges from club stalwart Alfred Maybury, Anthony Steede and former Trojans? coach and Somerset Cup Match all-rounder Mark Trott at the polls.
In addition to giving Somerset numerous years service on the football pitch, Scott, assistant director of corporate services for the Department of Tourism, has also served as treasurer at the West End club and sat on various management committees over the past decade.
Believed to be one of the youngest presidents elected at Somerset, Scott told : ?I?m certainly up for the challenge because if I wasn?t then I wouldn?t have even considered taking on the job. Overall I think I have a superb membership team.?
Steede, meanwhile, has replaced Maybury as vice-president, Charlotte (Molly) Simons replaces Dwayne Simmons as secretary while Trojans? captain Jelani Scott takes over from Anthony Bailey as treasurer.
Like Smith, Bailey, Maybury and Simmons each stood down from their respective posts while Lynn Wade retained the position of assistant secretary.
Asked whether his new role would conflict with his involvement on the football pitch, Scott replied: ?The duties and responsibilities that come along with being president will take up a lot of my time and so my focus will have to encompass a broader vision.
?Now I will have to keep focused on the entire membership and direction we as a club would like to go. So I do intend to gradually back away from the game.?
Wasting no time setting out his stall, Scott revealed both short and long-term goals he hoped to achieve during his watch at Cricket Lane.
?My vision is to mobilise our membership because I believe everything that is required to take the club to the next level actually exists in each and every one of our members,? he said. ?I believe our greatest commodity and asset is our members and so my short term goal is to get us back to a place where integrity, character and morals are paramount within our club and membership.
?And the long term goal is to re-establish Somerset Cricket Club as a premier sporting organisation within our community and ultimately Bermuda as a whole.?
Scott, who played a vital role during Trojans? slim 1-0 win over Devonshire Colts last weekend, could find himself in unfamiliar terrain on Sunday ? assuming a duel role as player/president.
?That?s if I make the team,? the veteran player smiled.
Trojans coach Dennis Brown commented: ?Four days ago he was one of my players. Now he?s become my boss and I?m more than certain Richard is capable of doing a great job.?
Brown also confirmed that striker Rodre (Piper) Wilson ? involved in a traffic accident last week ? had rejoined the squad in training this week.
Somerset, who will be without the services of suspended Sean Simmons in the heart of their defence on Sunday, are at home to Devonshire Cougars in one of two all-Premier Division FA Cup first round fixtures.
Prospect United recorded a win and three losses during a hectic opening day of the annual Indoor Police Soccer Tournament in Belgium on Tuesday.
The 2003 beaten FA Cup finalists began the ten-day tour on a positive note, Antoine Daniels? strike earning the local First Division club a narrow 1-0 win over Italy?s Questura Torino.
However, Prospect?s elation soon turned to despair as they suffered three losses on the trot against Holland (2-1), Macedonia (3-0) and Spain (4-1). Kenny Batrum netted Prospect?s consolation strikes against Holland and Spain.
Yesterday saw Earl Basden?s touring squad lose 1-0 to Holland, draw 1-1 with Russia before going down 3-0 to hosts Belgium.
DeForest Evans scored Prospect?s sole goal yesterday.
