Whitehurst wins actuarial award

Lorenzo Whitehurst is the first Bermudian student to receive a monetary award from Ordinance Holdings Ltd.'s Award for Achievement in Actuarial Studies offered to actuarial students from Bermuda.

Mr. Whitehurst, a Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies scholarship recipient, is in his senior year at Temple University studying for a degree in actuarial science.

In addition to gaining a degree, students who want to become fully accredited actuaries must pass an additional nine exams, usually taking the first two while in college and the remainder over the next few years after they have started full-time employment.

Mr. Whitehurst successfully completed the first two exams for admission to the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Guy Cloutier, president of Ordinance Holdings said: "We are delighted to show our support and encouragement to Lorenzo through this award of $750. He has demonstrated his talent and is working hard to achieve his dream.

"This also demonstrates our support of the great work BFIS is doing in providing scholarships, mentoring, internships and career guidance to students wanting to enter the insurance sector."

Ordinance Holdings Ltd. is a Bermuda-based actuarial consulting and reinsurance brokerage company, part of the American Safety Insurance Group.
