Concerns brew about Horseshoe Bay facilities

An operator of the concession at Horseshoe Bay urged the Government to provide more resources to keep the washrooms at the beach clean.

Tulani Bulford, one of the managers of Horseshoe Bay Live, claimed that the business has called for more cleaners at the facilities since taking over the concession in 2020.

He explained: “The two cleaners do a great job as much as they can, but they need more resources — the Government needs to increase funding to allow them to work how the beach works.”

Speaking last month, Mr Bulford noted that the washrooms are cleaned throughout the day, but believes that a cleaner should be present all day during the cruise ship season.

He said: “We keep pushing the Government for additional resources so these cleaners can do their jobs, but once you speak to Works and Engineering, it’s like falling on deaf ears.”

The comments came after Dave Hegner, from South Dennis, Massachusetts, wrote a Letter to the Editor — published today — about his latest experience at the beach.

Mr Hegner, who visited the island with his wife for the sixteenth time, wrote that the facilities, which include toilets, changing rooms and showers, “continue to be an embarrassment”, with “stalls blocked off, faucets dripping and a general mess”.

He told The Royal Gazette that Horseshoe Bay had did not have an outdoor snack bar or umbrellas and chairs to rent when he and his wife first visited the island in 1994.

The visitor said that the parking lot and concession at the beach had improved since then, but the changing room was in “dire need of a complete overhaul”.

However, the facilities appeared to be in fairly good condition when the Gazette visited the beach last month.

Mr Hegner claimed the beach filled up quickly after he and his wife arrived at about 9.30am on September 5, as at least one cruise ship was in port.

He added that the changing and restroom facilities “need to be completely redone, maybe knocked down and a [whole new building] built”.

Mr Hegner said: “Yes it is a beach, but you cannot continue to let this building stay the way it is … you cannot continue to have a crummy facility at a great beach.”

Members of the public can contact 236-5902 or parksdept@gov.bm to report any cleaning issues.

The Gazette provided an opportunity for the Ministry of Public Works and Environment to address concerns raised by Mr Bulford and Mr Hegner, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
