Bermuda's youngsters find the going tough
first round of competition in the under 19 boys division of the Pepsi Junior Caribbean Squash Championships yesterday.
And the number two seed Alric Thompson of the Cayman Islands was responsible for the demise of Bermuda's James Hubbard.
Bermuda's Mel Caines, seeded three in the competition, was also defeated yesterday, losing in straight games to Jason Mann of Guyana, who had beaten Bermuda's Chris Darrell the previous evening.
The story was little different amongst the under 16s and the under 14s, Bermuda's Brian Dodwell, Jesse Morton and Marco Bortoli all going out. Tommy Sherratt, however, will be bidding to do Bermuda proud tonight when he takes on Ryan Truss of Barbados in the boys under 16 semifinal.
Bermuda's only success in individual boys play yesterday went to young Nick Kyme in the under 12 division. Kyme had little trouble seeing off the challenge of Theron Muhabeer of Guyana, not conceding a point on his way to victory. He will go on to meet Matthew Wight of the Cayman Islands in the semifinal.
Ashlea Johansen of Bermuda lost out to Guyana's Kathy Shuffler in girls under 16 action, but Tracey Harvey booked a place in the semifinals with a victory over Phillipa Byles of the Cayman Islands in the under 14s.
Harvey will play number one seed Carla Jackson in semifinal action tonight, when Nicola Swain of Bermuda comes up against number two seed Ruth Fraser.
