St. David's star-struck

Western Stars joined Green Division leaders Police in the quarter-finals of the Limited Overs competition after a determined fielding performance saw off St. David's at Lord's.

After skittling out the visitors for a mediocre score, St. David's did little to press home their advantage as Leroy Wilson continued his sensational bowling efforts with returns of four for 21 that swung the game Stars' way.

Allen Richardson played the most positively of the St. David's bats, but after scoring 26 from 32 balls, the number four bat caught an attempted pull of Wilson too high in the bat and was caught at square leg by Hasan Durham. This signalled the start of St. David's decline, though opener Shea Pitcher was patient in a 66-minute stay that produced 21.

Cleon Scotland, who earlier hit a career-best 52, also played a pivotal role with the ball, claiming two for 29.

Wilson struck a critical blow with St. David's 91 for six when he claimed the wickets of Lionel Cann (15) and Dean Pitcher (16) in the first over of his second spell, both caught behind by skipper Anthony Manders.

Then, Durham tossed down seven overs of left-arm spin that yielded only 12 runs as St. David's backed themselves into a hole and eventually gave in to the opening attack of Allan Brangman (two for 11) and spinner Wayne Richardson (two for 24).

Earlier, St. David's were put in a position of strength by the new ball duo of Herbie Bascome and Scott Minors who had Stars reeling at 18 for three.

Manders (15) joined in a 34-run fourth-wicket stand with Scotland before two more quick wickets fell to leave Stars at 56 for five. It was then that Troy Durham (11) joined Scotland in a critical stand worth 44 runs. The visitors scraped for runs after that with Brangman hitting a quick 21.

Scotland's innings, ended by a neat piece of stumping by Shea Pitcher off Oliver Pitcher's bowling, included six fours.

Bascome took four for 20 from nine overs to lead the St. David's bowling and skipper Ken Pitcher claimed two for 24.

The win completed what turned out to be a profitable weekend for Stars who retained the Central Counties Cup the previous day when rain ruled out play in the scheduled third-round match against Police.

Southampton 140 St. George's 115 Stevie Lightbourne struck 42 and Olin Jones took three for 25 as Southampton beat St. George's by 25 runs at Wellington Oval.

Lightbourne and Kwame Tucker (21) steered Southampton from disaster with the score at 50 for three when they added 41 for the fourth wicket. Also among the runs were Janeiro Tucker with 28 and tail-ender Vance Campbell with 10 not out.

Spinner David Adams was the top bowler for the east-enders with two wickets for 15 from 7.5 overs while Eugene Foggo had two for 28.

St. George's had a decent start when openers Eugene Foggo (10) and Louis Foggo (27) put on 25, but once the former was dismissed wickets fell at a rapid rate.

Of the remaining batsmen only three reached doubled figures. Skipper Graham Fox scored 13 while Adams and Greg Foggo each scored 10. Taking wickets in addition to Jones were Gary Williams with two for 29 and Janeiro Tucker with two for 27.

The match between Warwick and Somerset Bridge took on bizarre proportions when Bridge were requested to begin their innings twice in a rain-affected match at White Hill field.

Warwick batted first and made 173 with Kevin Dill making 62, Peter Lee 24 and Hoyt Zuill 21. But rain stopped play after Bridge had made 41 for one after nine overs.

As they were off the field for over an hour, umpire George Francis ruled that Bridge could start their innings again and this time they were 38 for two when play was called after an additional eight overs.

A No Result is worth one point to each team.
