Hemp hits record ton as Bermuda thump Uganda
Uganda 352-7
Bermuda 356-2
A double century partnership between centurions David Hemp and Stephen Outerbridge propelled Bermuda to an emphatic eight-wicket triumph over Uganda in a high-scoring 2011 World Cup qualifying ninth and tenth place playoff at Senwes Park yesterday.
Outerbridge joined Hemp at the crease upon the dismissal of opener Fiqre Crockwell (28) in the 12th over and together they ran a toothless Uganda attack into the ground and entertained those in attendance with a masterful display of strokeplay on both sides of the stumps.
They added a record 223 runs for the third wicket off 180 balls in 108 minutes, surpassing the 180 they produced just two days prior against Oman.
Hemp's 170 not out ¿ his third century of the tournament ¿ is the highest total by a batsman of the tournament to date. It was also his highest in one day cricket and a record for a Bermudian batsman, bettering the previous mark (124) he set over the weekend against Oman.
He thumped 11 fours and five sixes off 141 balls in 197 minutes and brought up his second successive century in the 32nd over.
Hemp did, however, survive a chance on 116 when he was dropped in the deep. But he regained his poise and added another 54 runs to his personal account to make the Ugandans pay dearly for their sloppiness in the field.
"It's pleasing to get a hundred in a pressure situation. Today we managed to chase down a really big score and for me that is very pleasing in itself," he told The Royal Gazette.
Outerbridge also dazzled at the other end and extended his superb batting form by smashing eight fours and three sixes off 99 balls in 117 minutes.
He brought up his maiden one day century in the 41st over with a single of spinner Baig Akbar off 92 balls in 105 minutes and after reaching the milestone pumped his fist in the air in jubilation. And for good reason having fallen twice in the past in the nervous nineties.
His previous one day best was the 99 he stroked against Cayman Island in 2006 and the 91 he gathered off Oman over the weekend.
"To get over 350 to win was a big accomplishment and it just shows the potential we have whenever we put our minds to it," he said.
The Bailey's Bay stalwart eventually fell prey to a mistimed pull off seamer Kenneth Kamyuka. But by then the score read 300 for two and any thoughts the Ugandans might have had of containing Bermuda in the closing overs were dashed as Lionel Cann did what he does best, slapping a robust 32 of just 18 deliveries and sealing his team's win with nine balls to spare with a monstrous six over long off.
Kamyuka and off spinner Frank Nsubuga accounted for the only Bermuda wickets to tumble.
Earlier, Uganda threatened to run away with the match when they put Bermuda's blunted attack to the sword.
Number three batsman Bibodi Nehul led the way with a fine 109 off 117 balls in 153 minutes and shared in stands of 95 and 121 with all-rounder Joel Olwenyi and Benjamin Musoke.
Middle order bat Nsubuga also decorated the scoreboard by blasting 98 from just 63 balls in 91 minutes and along with Musoke added 59 runs for the fifth-wicket to keep his team motoring along at seven runs an over.
All rounder Olwenyi was also in 20/20 mode as he belted a belligerent 45 off 49 balls batting at number four as Bermuda's bowlers struggled to put the ball in the right areas.
Seamer Kyle Hodsoll, making his first appearance of the tournament, led the Bermuda attack with two for 71 while spinners Dwayne Leverock (one for 59) and Tamauri Tucker (one for 70) and part-time seamer Outerbridge (one for 66) had one each.
The charismatic Leverock and all-rounders Cann and Janeiro Tucker bowed out of the international arena immediately following the match.
With yesterday's remarkable win Bermuda secured ninth position overall at the 2011 World Cup qualifiers in South Africa.
