Bermuda cruise into semi-finals
Caribbean Rugby Championship yesterday.
David Olsen scored two tries and Butch Robinson and Mike Montgomery added others, sparking Bermuda to a 38-5 victory over the Cayman Islands.
Tomorrow, Bermuda play the Bahamas, 29-7 winners over Guadeloupe. The other semi-final pits Trinidad and Tobago against Martinique, who knocked out hosts Barbados with a 16-10 opening-game victory.
Playing in exhausting heat and humidity, Bermuda produced a rewarding effort against the big, well-drilled Cayman side.
After just ten minutes, Gareth Davies broke blind from a scrimmage ten yards inside the Cayman half and fed Robinson, who scored a try in the right corner.
Fly half Alan Oliver kicked three successive penalties to silence the pro-Cayman crowd and give Bermuda a 14-0 lead after 32 minutes. Then, from a set play, Davies released Olsen, who scored his first try just before the half.
Oliver converted his fourth penalty early in the second half before the Caymans finally got on the board.
But Bermuda's back row of Patrick Cooper, Peter Shillingford and Rod Stewart held on and with 12 minutes left, Bermuda counter-attacked with Olsen running in for his second try.
Montgomery then sealed the victory with a final-minute try, converted by Oliver.
In the other opening-day game, Trinidad and Tobago routed Guyana 64-0.
