The $130,000 job, to be finished within three weeks, has been ordered by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Executives from Airport Operations were told they would have to comply with new civil aviation regulations when they took over from the US Navy in 1995.

Maintenance and engineering manager Marshall Minors said: "The building was built in 1960 and it was a bit of a landmark but under civil aviation rules it was an obstruction so we have had to remove it. "It's off the taxiway but regulations stipulate that any construction must be a certain distance from the centre line.'' He said the hangar used to house the Navy's P3 Orion planes.

"We're also moving a number of small concrete stands which were built as buffers by the Navy,'' said Mr. Minors.

"The work started about two weeks ago and should be finished by the end of the month.'' He said the total contract -- worth $154,000 -- was being managed by Serco and the work was being done by Devonshire-based Island Construction.
