robber who stole $10,000 worth of jewellery from his wife and threatened to kill her.

Henry Keating said the robbery of his wife while she rode a moped on Wednesday morning was "horrendous'' and resulted in the loss of jewellery of great sentimental value.

Nancy Keating was knocked off her cycle and robbed of a waist pouch containing $10,000 worth of jewellry as she and a group of other visitors rode their mopeds near Pink Beach on South Raod, Smith's Parish.

A teenager rode out behind Mrs. Keating who was last in the line of cycles.

The youth, who was not wearing a helmet, attempted to grab Mrs. Keating's pouch, causing her to lose control and hit the kerb.

As she lay on the ground, the youth began pulling at the pouch.

When the screaming woman resisted the culprit, he punched her several times, demanded she hand over the jewellery she was wearing and threatened to kill her.

As he tried to get a diamond necklace from around Mrs. Keating's neck, a motorist stopped, causing the robber to run off.

Some of the jewellery and the pouch -- minus the cash -- was found in the surrounding area and was turned in to Police.

Police later arrested a Smith's Parish youth in connection with the robbery.

Mr. Keating said: "This was an horrendous crime, he threatened to kill my wife. I will follow this even if I have to do it from the States.

"The jewellery had sentimental value for my wife. She wanted to keep it with her.'' The Keatings, from New Jersey, are members of the St. George's Club.

Tourism Minister David Dodwell yesterday called on all Bermudians to do something about attacks on visitors.

"As a country we should be outraged that something like this is taking place.

I want to make an appeal to every Bermudian and resident to keep an eye out for these things and assist in what every way they feel comfortable.

"I'd like to thank the persons who responded to the incident,'' he said.

"Every one of us has a part to play in ensuring the safety of our visitors.''
