Man dies in 'suspicious' circumstances

On the scene: Police attend a home (yellow) on North Shore Pembroke where a man died under "suspiciou" circumstances, according to Police yesterday

Police have launched an investigation after a 31-year-old Pembroke man was declared dead after he was found unconscious inside his North Shore home yesterday.

And Police are treating the sudden death as "suspicious".

When The Royal Gazette turned up at the home, adjacent to Jason's Barber Shop and just east of Clarke's Tuxedo Shop, swarms of Police officers and Detectives had already descended upon the immediate area interviewing witnesses and examining the perimeter.

But the victim had already been rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, according to Police, where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 4.02 p.m. by an on call physician.

A Police spokesperson said: "At 3.41 p.m., Police responded to a report of a non-responsive male found in a dwelling on North Shore Road in Pembroke, just east of Clarke's Tuxedo Shop.

"The 31-year-old Pembroke man was rushed to KEMH via ambulance where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 4.02 p.m. by an on call physician at the hospital.

"At this time, an investigation into this suspicious death is being headed up by the Serious and Organised Crime Units.

"Foul play is suspected. Anyone who may have been in the area between 3 p.m. and 3.41 p.m. or may have seen anything is encouraged to call 299-4315 or the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.

"No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified.

"One of the victim's neighbours, who would not be named, told this paper: "I heard about it when I was at work... I couldn't believe it when I found out who the guy was!

"Then I rushed home to see what was going on but by that time the ambulance had already gone and the Police had the whole area blocked off."

Asked to describe the victim's character, the neighbour responded: "The only thing I will say is that he was a nice guy... he was real cool this is all a shock."

Also, a source who knew the victim reacted: "I just feel sorry for (his family). This is all very upsetting; to know that your (family member) is dead.

"I just feel for the family, his "I just feel for the family, his mom, his sister and brother and his father."

Meanwhile, back at the scene on North Shore, onlookers claimed the victim was stabbed to death inside of his home by another man.

However, when confronted with these claims last night, Police refused to confirm or deny anything relating to the circumstances of the man's death.

Scores of bystanders, mostly area residents, looked on as stern-faced Police Detectives stood guard around the victim's home, which was cordoned off with yellow Police crime-scene tape.

Clients outside of the Jason's Barber Shop, which had a bird's-eye view of Police movements, told The Royal Gazette all they saw was an ambulance departing the home and it appeared some of them knew the victim but refused to elaborate to this paper.

More details about the victim and his death are expected to be released by Police some time today.
