Show some leg, guys!
There were a lot of men wandering around Hamilton in women?s clothing yesterday ? and they?re Harvard men to boot. But, never fear, the Harvard boys are not trying to change their stars ? they were just promoting the 156-year old Hasty Pudding Theatricals? 2005 production, ?Terms of Frontierment?.
The show, the troupe?s 157th production, will be showing at City Hall from March 30-April 2 at 8 p.m. Hasty Pudding Theatricals, started by Harvard undergraduates in 1844, is America?s oldest theatre company, performing more than 40 shows annually in Cambridge, New York, and Bermuda for a loyal audience of 15,000.
Describing ?Terms of Frontierment? as a ?wild Wild West show?, tour manager Joe Bress told The Royal Gazette that this year?s production is about more than mere song, dance and outrageous comic innuendo.
Chronicling the journey of Luke N. Forglory and his ?geeky girl scout sidekick? Wanda Buymycookies as they search for that great treasure of the American west ? the Oregon Grail ? Mr. Bress said part proceeds from the event will go towards Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Sandys Rotary Club.
?Last year we gave them more than $1,500 each,? he said. ?That?s something we?re proud of, our charitable giving has really increased.? The group also donates proceeds to public schools in their home state of Massachusetts.
Following 12 different characters ? including and Indian chief and his daughter Pocahotness, a country western singer and her hillbilly mother, and the lovesick buffalo Alma Stextinct ? the show ends with what Mr. Bress described as ?the traditional Hasty Pudding kickline?, where all the cast members dress up in showgirl outfits for one last hurrah.
Students write the script and compose the music, he said, while professional directors and choreographers are brought in to assist. The show tends to take over the lives of those involved ? particularly the cast, band, and technical support.
?It?s an incredible commitment for anybody,? Mr. Bress said.
Hasty Pudding has been completing its annual run in Bermuda since 1963. More information on the company can be found at www.hastypudding.org, while tickets can be purchased for $25 at www.boxoffice.bm, by calling 295-1727, or by visiting the Visitor?s Service Bureau from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m.
The show opens tonight.
