Cost may beach plan for Tall Ships gala

nothing but positive, the department of Tourism's Carol Wills told The Royal Gazette it's not clear sailing yet.

"It's a wonderful opportunity, a real attention-getter. This is the kind of prestigious event we want to see more of.'' Nevertheless there remained a few hurdles to clear. The financial implications, she said, still have to be worked out.

First there is the question of $100,000 dollar port fee required by the International Sail Training Association (ISTA), who are also looking for Bermuda to waive dockage fees and provide shuttle services to vessels moored in harbour.

"Who pays for the tug boats, the hookups, the communications?'' asked Ms Wills.

ISTA approached Bermuda and would like to have the Island included in its itinerary when it announces the project to the world in a November press conference: "We don't have a lot of time for talk,'' added Ms Wills.

Preliminary meetings have already been held between ISTA and ASTA (American Sail Training Association) and a group of private and civic representatives.

Ms Wills said the department of Tourism shares the enthusiasm but cautioned Government may not want to become the lead agency in the venture. The proposal she added, still had to go before the Minister, David Dodwell.

"Still, somebody has to sign a contract, and it has to be done soon,'' she said.
