Third win in a row for RBYC flagship
Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) flagship Contest III clinched a third Coronation Cup on the trot on a blustery day of fitted dinghy racing in Mangrove Bay last weekend.
Despite failing to score a single bullet, Contest III skipper Somers Kemp and crew did just enough to secure overall season honours for the sixth time in the past seven years.
Challenger II finished runner up in the Coronation Cup and were closely followed by Elizabeth II who finished third respectively.
High winds resulted in only two dinghies taking to the seas in the West End last Sunday, with host boat Challenger sweeping line honours in all of the day's three races.
"The other two boats (Elizabeth II and Victory IV) decided it was too windy," Kemp explained. "We came second in the first race, sank in the second and finished the last race in second."
Earlier this summer Contest III won a sixth successive Heritage Cup, successfully defended the Leon D.Fox Cup and reclaimed the Anniversay Cup to make it a cleap sweep of top honours on the opening day of the season in St.George's Harbour.
"We had a good start to the season and were able to sail the majority of the races through the season with the same core group of people (Lars Simmons, Roger Mello, Dimitri Stevens, Mackenzie Cooper, Jonah Jones, Douglas De Couto, William Thompson, Rockal Evans, Robert Burkart, Peter Miller, Oliver Riihiluoma, Hubert Watlington, Kevin Horsefield, Jesse DeCouto and Kemp. We never had a real bad points day," added Kemp.
"We were able to build a good lead early on and went from there with consistent finishes near the front of the fleet each race."
