Young Jadeiro sparks St. George's Sec.
sponsored by Metro and Planters Peanuts, got under way on Monday with some very exciting games.
The junior girls started on Monday with league champions St. George's Secondary beating Northlands 27-15, led by guard Jadeiro Harvey.
In senior girls action, Northlands beat Saltus 34-24 with Danita Fox scoring 24 for the winners.
The other two scheduled games were not played as Berkeley forfeited to Warwick Academy and Whitney forfeited to Chaffee High School. Neither of the teams have been eliminated, as the girls are playing a round-robin tournament. The boys division started on Tuesday with some mixed results. In the junior boys underdogs Northlands, who had not won a game all season, upset MSA who were third in the league. MSA never had the lead but came within two points by the end of the third quarter, but Northlands outscored MSA in the final quarter to clinch a 32-27 victory.
The Berkeley junior boys had a much easier task of beating Chaffee 57-21 in their game. Captain and point guard Timothy Aleman led Berkeley to victory with 20 points.
In the senior boys, Sandys met Northlands in one of the two scheduled games.
In league action Sandys forfeited their game to Northlands but the tournament game was closer than the score of 61-47 perhaps indicated with the lead changing on a number of occasions.
In the other senior boys game a much improved Warwick Secondary team got revenge on Whitney Institute. In league action Warwick Secondary lost by a mere two points but in tournament play they handily beat Whitney 44-23.
In the junior play St. George's won their pool and proceeded to the semifinals to play the runners-up in the other pool, which has not been determined yet.
The Lady Dragons had a decisive victory over MSA Saints. Point guard Jadeiro Harvey led her team with 24 points in the 34-20 victory. In the other junior game Warwick Academy defeated Chaffee 23-13. Two of the Chaffee's starters fouled out early in the game and the tireless effort by the substitutes just was not enough.
In senior girls action, MSA had a convincing win over Northlands 49-22. MSA built up an early lead and maintained this throughout the game. In the other senior game Chaffee and Warwick Academy played an exciting nail-biting match with the victor still undecided with six seconds on the clock.
There were several lead changes during the game as Chaffee led by four points going into the final quarter but two quick baskets by Warwick Academy tied the game and Warwick Academy kept momentum to win 30-26.
Tournament action continues on Monday with girls preliminary games on Monday, boys semifinals on Tuesday and girls semifinals on Wednesday. The finals are slated for next Friday at MSA.
